Via31 Condominium is located in Soi Sukhumvit 31, amongst one of the most prime residential area of Bangkok. The project is a midrise block comprising a total of 88 residential units, ranging from 1 bedroom units to 3 bedroom units.
Inspired by the building reclusive location, in a small quiet private lane, secluded from the main road. We imagined that the architecture as cosy bird-nest, where residents can live privately in the middle of busy area. The artificial straw façade wraps around the residents shielding them from prying eyes. In the centre, the nest is carved allowing light to penetrate through giving the internal corridor a sense of warmth. At the bottom of these light wells are two three covered courtyards finished in black polished granite upon which circular thatched seatings are placed. These are reminiscent of incubating eggs or miniaturised nests a reminder of the overall theme. The residents can enjoy the warm sunrays whilst waiting for the lift or congregate in the larger courtyard.
The artificial straws are made of fine aluminium vertical screens in various warm wood colour. The façade screen and the cantilevered ledge act as sun shading device. The exterior screen density is varied, informed by the interior functions; from the widest opening at living room to the densest area covering the condensing units. This differentiating density gives an organic aesthetic furthering the nest analogy.
The project has a longitudinal garden on the perimeter, which is divided into a pool and semi sunken seatings for residents to hangout. The landscape is designed to provide privacy and provide a tranquil experience. To reduce the linear effect of the pool, more space is created by carving into the ground floor of the building to create connecting facilities area. The pool deck has the added benefit of being shaded by the room above. The gym is walled by frameless glass creating a connection with all activities allowing families to connect even whilst engaging in different activities.
